Synopsis
The study explores the objectives and challenges of the proposed Green Claims Directive, with particular focus on its consumer protection aspects. The starting point of the paper is the recognition that promoting the green transition and sustainable consumption is not solely an environmental policy task, but also a fundamentally consumer protection issue that requires a novel legislative approach. The creation of the concept of green consumer protection is justified by the recognition that sustainability and consumer protection can no longer be interpreted independently of each other: informed consumer choices presuppose the integration of environmental considerations, while the achievement of sustainability goals is inconceivable without effective consumer protection. The directive aims to make green claims more reliable, reduce greenwashing, and strengthen consumer autonomy in decision-making.
