Synopsis

What are the characteristics of a modern nation? Is it a common language, the same religion, or a collective historical memory that binds members of the nation most strongly? How did the Serbian and Albanian nations come to be? How did Serbs and Albanians become attached to the territory of Kosovo? This scholarly monograph seeks to answer these questions.
The Kosovo conflict has been at the centre of international attention for decades. During the war between Albanian guerrillas and the Serbian state, and then right after Kosovo’s independence, many experts attempted to explain the events to the academic community and the wider public. However, few undertake cool-headed analyses that take a step back from heated daily sensations.
The author, who spent nearly a decade and a half of his life in the Balkans, after outlining the theoretical and historical background of the phenomena of nation and nationalism, provides an overview of the struggle of the Serbs and Albanians for Kosovo from 1878 to the present day. The uniqueness of his analysis lies in the way he breaks down the conflict into its dimensions. Serbia and the Albanians did not wage their war only with weapons: demography, diplomacy, historiography, and memory politics were all separate battlefields during this century-and-a-half-long rivalry.
The monograph also reveals that in today's world order, a small nation or ethnic group cannot necessarily turn a struggle to its advantage with weapons alone. By the end of the book, it becomes clearer why the Albanian black eagle currently seems to be winning the battle for control of Kosovo.
