Synopsis
The threats that have emerged over the past few years have increased the focus of the international community on security and defence matters, with the result that space assets are gradually being recognised as critical elements of defence strategies around the world. Although these domains remain mainly within national competences, it is clear that in the case of outer space, this is an area where international initiatives are vital, especially from the European perspective. The recent outbreaks of war and pandemic have highlighted the need to use satellite communications as a response to emerging hazards.
