Synopsis

Building green, sustainable communities (SDG11) is an essential component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the 2015–2030 period. The European Union (EU) plays a vital role as a “custodian” and promoter of these goals. The effective implementation of the “Sustainable Human Settlements” objective is incredibly crucial, considering that 332 million people in the EU – nearly three-quarters of its population – reside in urban areas, with almost 40% living in cities. Furthermore, the EU’s green transition entails making choices between alternatives where digital solutions are indispensable. However, digitalisation, including the use of artificial intelligence, is resource-intensive and has significant environmental impacts. The European Digital Single Market Strategy adopted by the EU marked a significant milestone in establishing a sustainable, digital, and resilient market.
